A consortium of allied dental care professionals joined in a cooperative effort in the research and development of these competency based skill standards. Represented in these allied dental professions were dental assistants, dental hygienists, denturists, dental laboratory technicians and dental administrative services. Allied dental workers are needed for skilled knowledge based work in all areas of dentistry and the dental support companies and organizations involved in every kind of dental product and service. Allied dental professionals are involved in careers providing direct care services in a variety of settings including private dental practices, public health, nursing homes, preferred provider organizations, community care clinics, hospital clinics, schools, correction facilities and dental sales. These type of careers demand workers that have a wide variety of skills than incorporate the use of technology, materials and new techniques.

Five job clusters were identified:

Dental Hygienist Critical Work Functions:

A) Promote Community Oral health;

B) Perform Infection Control and Safety Procedures;

C) Perform Risk Management/Client-Patient Assessment;

D) Plan to provide Dental Hygiene Treatment;

E) Provide Preventive Dental Hygiene Care;

F) Provide Therapeutic Treatment;

G) Perform Restorative Procedures;

H) Perform Stress/Anxiety and Pain Control Procedures;

I) Maintain Records, Inventory and Equipment;

J) Assure Quality.



Denturist Critical Work Functions:

A) Perform Patient Consultation;

B) Examine Patient;

C) Perform chair side Work for Compete Denture;

D) Perform chair side Work for Partial Denture Framework;

E) Fabricate Complete Denture;

F) Perform chair side Work for a Reline Denture;

G) Fabricate Partial Denture Framework;

H) Fabricate Temporary Reline;

I) Perform Denture Adjustment;

J) Perform Infection Control/Safety Procedures;

K) Perform Front Office Duties;

L) Build and Maintain Business Growth;

M) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot.



Dental Laboratory Technician Critical Work Functions:


A) Evaluate Case for Outcome;

B) Fabricate Cast;

C) Fabricate Gold Crown;

D) Fabricate PFM Substructure;

E) Fabricate Porcelain Restoration;

F) Fabricate all Ceramic and Resin Restoration;

G) Fabricate Complete Denture;

H) Fabricate Partial Denture Framework;

I) Fabricate Partial Denture Acrylic;

J) Fabricate Simple Orthodontic Appliances;

K) Prepare Caser for Delivery;

L) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot;

M) Perform Business Operations.



Dental Assistant Critical Work Functions:


A) Manage Hazard Communication/Perform Infection Control;

B) Promote Health;

C) Perform Patient Assessment/Record Keeping;

D) Prepare to Provide Treatment;

E) Assist in Preventive Procedure;

F) Assist in Restorative Procedure;

G) Assist in Fixed Restoration Procedure;

H) Assist in Endodontic Procedure;

I) Assist in Removable Prosthodontic Procedure;

J) Assist in Surgical Procedure;

K) Assist in Periodontal Procedure;

L) Perform Fabrication and Prepare Case;

M) Perform Supportive Tasks;

N) Promote/Maintain Practice Growth;

O) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot.



Dental Practice Administrator Critical Work Functions:

A) Manage Practice;

B) Perform Bookkeeping/Record Keeping;

C) Manage Third Party Benefits;

D) Perform Reception Duties;

E) Perform Administrative Tasks;

F) Manage Staff;

G) Manage Office Systems;

H) Promote/Maintain Practice Growth;

I) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot.
