Washington State Skill Standards

In order to compete in the rapidly changing cosmetology industry, cosmetologists must have the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to compete effectively and efficiently in the work environment. As more complex performance demands increase, cosmetologists will be expected to be accomplished and proficient in their work skills. This level of expertise and expected competence form the basis for the development of comprehensive Skill Standards for the cosmetology industry.

A three-phase process was undertaken to develop the Skill Standards:

1) Identify critical work functions, key activities, and performance indicators and identify occupational technical knowledge and skills.

2) Identify and level academic and employability skills.

3) Validate the critical work functions and key activities.

Two job clusters were identified:

Salon Coordinator Critical Work Functions:

A) Coordinate Salon Functions;

B) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot

Cosmetologist Critical Work Functions:

A) Serve Clients;

B) Perform Business Operations;

C) Provide Services;

D) Maintain Personal/Professional Growth;

E) Problem Solve/Troubleshoot.
